Product Review Baofeng UV-82HPThe Baofeng UV-82HP is an excellent addition to any Amateur Radio operators gear bag. It begins with a high quality radio at a very affordable price. The UV-82HP has many of the features hams may be familiar with from other Baofeng radios such as the UV-5 Series including VHF / UHF Dual Band, 128 Channel, Alphanumeric Display, DTMF, Voice Guide in clear English, FM Music receiver, Flashlight, and Personal Security Alarm. The long life and light weight Lithium Ion rechargeable battery and desk top charger keep the radio powered up and ready for action in a variety of case colors.
The UV-82HP then adds more transmit power for those hard to reach locations. You can choose the 8 watt High Power, 4 watt Medium Power, or 1 watt Low Power to suit your needs. My favorite feature is the two position transmit Push-to-Talk switch. Coupled with the Dual Receive option, this allows Hams to monitor two frequencies at once AND selectively transmit on the proper channel with assurance. You set your channels as Mode A and Mode B, clearly shown on the front display and press the top of the PTT switch to transmit on Mode A, the bottom of the PTT switch to transmit on Mode B. No more stopping to check and adjust the selected mode before each transmission. This also makes for easy operation when wearing gloves during inclement weather. With Wide Band / Narrow Band selection per channel and CTCSS / DCS for Encode and Decode, the wide Transmit / Receive range of VHF 136 – 174MHz and UHF 400 – 520 MHz allows for monitoring analog frequencies and transmission on authorized frequencies. This makes the UV-82HP a very good choice for regular Amateur Radio use and for an ARES/RACES event when Public Safety channels may also be in use. Programming can easily be done from the keypad for on the fly changes and by cloning from another radio with the same firmware. The most complete radio features are activated by download of the free no-cost CHIRP software and inexpensive programming cable. The on screen prompts make creating your personal radio program straight forward and easy to understand. The large loud speaker lets you hear other radio transmissions and a quality mic element sends your voice clearly over the air at your choice of power setting. The DTMF pad allows for signalling and control of remote devices such as EchoLink. Accessories are available including ear piece, speaker microphone, extended capacity battery, protective case, high gain or external antenna.
